Feeling Helpless (and Ashamed)

Unlike some other Aussie blogs, I don't post about current affairs or political matters. Though I keep abreast of the news [I listen to NewsRadio mainly, and through it NPR, the BBC World Service and Deutsch Welle Radio, among others], I don't have the political insight or intellectual knowledge to make informed comments. But I feel I need to say something about our immigration detention policy.

With the latest news of two kids being detained in a detention centre, and one of them supposedly seeing acts of self-multilation, I wonder what on earth our government is doing. Have they lost control? Did they ever have it?

Add to this the fact an Australian resident was sent back to the Philippines and another Australian resident was wrongfully detained, and I don't know what to think.

And we also lock up people for seven years, most likely ensuring they'll need psychiatric help for life. What on earth is going on?

I feel utterely helpless. And ashamed. And in a state of despair. But I don't have answers. I wouldn't know what to do or where to start.

I can but pray, Lord, have mercy.
