A trip tonight to my friend K's old parish, St Mary the Virgin, for Evensong. The fellow shipmate who was at K's birthday yesterday was also in attendance tonight. It was absolutely wonderful. St Mary's has a very talented choir (you can hear some recordings here): and tonight was no exception. I do love Orthodox chant: but hearing a choir and organ still transports me to the heavens.
In addition to the setting (Howells' Collegium Regale), an anthem penned by K herself (who is a talented organist, singer and composer!) was sung: Justorum animae (Souls of the Righteous). Her anthem weaved texts from Wisdom of Solomon Chapter 3, Revelation 2 and 3, and Julian of Norwich's "All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well." Beautiful.
Evensong was followed by cake and tea to celebrate K's birthday, and then I was off home and K was off to the airport to head back to Brisbane. Another wonderful day and a wonderful evening: thanks be to God.
