Thanks for your wishes. And thanks for your story and the consequent encouragement Unordered! Three years will pass by quickly, I hope! ;-)
My (Italian) manager gained a lot of glee today from my feeble attempts at rolling the r. I asked her how she did it, and out came a perfect rolling r that continued for several seconds. I tried it and something akin to a gargling sound resulted. I tried it again. Same result. And again. And again. She thought it the funniest thing she'd seen -- and I'm sure it was. For something so simple (for her), it was very interesting, and the cause of much laughter, to see me struggling so much.
She kindly told me where my tongue should be (curled up slightly behind my top teeth) and the shape of my mouth (pursed) and how I should breathe out (normally). I shall continue to practise. On the 6th of October, 2008, I hope to have an update. Watch this space.
