This year i was contemplating what to give up for Lent. My initial thought was to give up something that was very important in my daily life so i was going to give up Salad and Jogging ;-) Anyway after serious thought i realised that there were possibly loads of things i could give up ie Chocolate. Although i remember the last time i tried that about 10 years ago. I lasted 28 days without any chocolate. The only problem was, is that i started really craving meat. This was a huge problem as i had been a vegetarian for about 6 years. I kept having dreams about burgers and pieces of chicken and finally sucumed to eating meat again. I remember sitting there in a cafe with my friend looking at the bacon sandwich i ordered and 10minutes had past before i even plucked the courage to pick it up. The same thing happened at the age of about 19 when i kept having dreams about going to the shop and buying 10 benson and hedges ( cigarettes for the non British readers or those who dont know what they are ) Anyway to get back the subject before i sound too bizarre.
Tonight i finally got sorted what im going to give up for lent. Yes i know its late but better late than never. As it involves money, i will try and do this thing until the 24th of April. That is my payday. There is no point doing it to this pay day as its only 2 weeks away and not really a challenge.
Ok this is my thoughts.... I spend far too much money. Yes i know we all seem to do that, but i have this amazing nack of buying too much crap. Obviously i dont think its crap as otherwise i wouldnt buy it. What i tend to do though is buy stuff as i think its a bargain and i may need it in the future. For example. Today i brought a new fitted valance for my bed £7, A long pair of denim curtains £12 and a white antique style mirror £5. All bargains? YES. Did i really need them? NO!!!!!!!!!
I then got to thinking about the other things i buy which arnt essential. So I will no longer be popping onto ebay for the 46 days duration. I will even attempt to not buy my lunch while at work. I realised tonight that if i stop buying a sandwhich meal deal when im at work then i could be saving nearly £100 a month. I will be making things at home to take to work over the next 46 days.
This is my pledge. For the next 46 days i will only spend money on things that are essential. I will not be spending money on so called bargains. It will be interesting to see how much i actually save.
The fact that i get money every month from my job should be a privilage and although its ok to buy nice things for myself i have to no when to stop and think " Do i really need this?"
I will keep you all posted on how i get on and also the things that i chose not to buy over the next 46 days.
