cancer

hmm, not so cheery, this one. My father and father-in-law have just had unpleasant brushes with it, a friend of my husband's has just died of it and last night one of my friends told me her mother was unlikely to live long enough to see her stepsisters even through school. Cancer is a pig of a disease and there seems to be an awful lot of it about.
I found it hard to know what to say to my friend last night (which is unusual as I am NEVER stuck for words), but her mum is only just over fifty and they had really thought she was well again and it's all pretty terrible. Other than plying her with decent red wine and hugging her, there didn't seem a lot I could do. I prayed with her too - which is not something I do a lot. Trouble is, praying out loud is not my forte - it all turns into "Lord, just, really, really, just" - which is not very much use to anyone. And it makes me cringe. But you know, God can even work through people who are as useless as me - which is always a relief after a bout of verbal diarrhoea like that.
Actually, the most disastrous thing about the evening was the pizza - which had no tomato and a lot of cranberry sauce and meat on it. It was not unlike trying to eat a scone with jam and chicken - not to be recommended. The moral of at least that bit of the story is "don't try this at home". As for the rest of it, I'm not so sure.

oh and today's handy household tip is how to spell diarrhoea. I used to only know that it begins with dia until my mother in law informed me that the best way to remember is with this handy little phrase. So diarrhoea is spelt D I A then Run Run Hurry Or Exploding Ar*e. Apologies if the crudeness of this offends - I figured its usefulness outweighed its rudeness.
