oh we do like to be beside the seaside

Yesterday Mr Fishsoup and I went to Brighton, which was a bit of a nostalgia trip. We were teenage sweethearts once (with a large gap in the middle of our two relationships) when I was sixteen and he was seventeen. Then, we both wore DM boots, and Mr Fishsoup had more hair and I wore more eyeliner.
It was lovely to go back (not to mention lovely to have a whole day to ourselves). We ran along the beach, and I paddled in the sea - very cold! and we walked along the pier holding hands and eating doughnuts. We don't do enough of that nowadays, and it made me think that we haven't changed all that much. We still make the same terrible jokes, could talk for England and i would still wear purple tasselly skirts and velvet hats if I really thought I could get away with it and didn't mind doing all that handwashing.
We're fortunate to have all that shared history - although I'm glad we're not as angsty as we were all those years ago. Curiously enough, Brighton seems to have grown less edgy and more 'grown-up' at roughly the same rate that we have - far fewer 'hippy shops' and more branches of Jigsaw nowadays. It seems to have grown as comfortable in its skin as we have, which is good, in a way -although I guess there's a fine line between comfortable and complacent.
