gross reality

A Jeanette Winterson term, I think, for when the normal rears its ugly head when you're trying to be all super-spiritual.
Yesterday we did the first of our "alt worshippy" services, a short and simple devotion for Advent, that required a lot of work. As our church leader remarked, we moved most of our front room into the prayer room in our church building to make it a bit more inviting. We had cushions and candles, and lots of chanty music, and Celtic prayers, and a brilliant story from a man who does proper storytelling. It was great. Everyone managed to sit around and pray and listen without saying "Yes lord jesus yes" out loud for a whole hour (nearly). But it was, in short, a lot of work.
Then we got home, feeling relatively spiritual (for us) if not a bit knackered. Put all the sofa cushions back on the sofa and unpacked all the stuff. Then the cat was sick on the duvet. Thank you cat - gross reality rears its head again.
