WELL if what the terrorists were trying to induce was fearful and irrational behaviour, of course they have succeeded. I am perturbed that police (plain clothes ones too) have shot and killed a man near Stockwell, and I really hope they knew what they were doing.
It was hard, getting on the bus this morning, thinking about whether or not anyone else on that bus might have a bomb in their bag - and i tried so hard not to think it. But if I am thinking that, then what lots of people are thinking is probably worse. I am so terribly sad that something happened again - though thankful that it was so spectacularly unsuccessful.
What it says though, is that that wasn't an isolated incident. And suddenly people are frightened to go out, and of their own neighbours. According to a press release I got today, more people are buying homes in Central London cos they are afraid to get the Tube.
What happens next? Hopefully not trigger-happy cops, mosque sieges and racial hatred. I'm praying that we can keep the spirit that seemed to pervade after 7/7. These people attack all of us - whatever our race, colour and beliefs. It's hard not to be afraid, and will be hard for so many people not to let it spill into hatred against particular groups.
A Dumbledore so shrewdly put it - the wisest thing to fear is fear itself. Doesn't make it any easier to tackle though, does it?
