My mum once pinned a bible verse to my door for me to find when I got up. "How nice!" I hear you say. Not so much. It said:

Proverbs 6: 9*

I am struggling with a migraine today - I had to borrow someone's bed after chapel and get some serious sleep. So anyway, the blogging I had planned for this week has not happened for various reasons so I will save it for next year.

Getting back on track, I was hoping to share a psalm with you today. I've been looking at the penitential psalms so far, but now I think it is time to change track and pick out my favourites.

Psalm 42 is one that most people will be familiar with either through the song "As the deer pants for the water so my soul longs after you" or through the choral piece "Like as the hart desireth waterbrooks" (can't remember who it is by). I've sung both and I love it. Just the first few verses for you since it is nearly lunchtime.

Psalm 42: 1-5

As a deer longs for flowing streams,
so my soul longs for you, O God.

My soul thirsts for God,
for the living God.
When shall I come and behold the face of God?

My tears have been my food day and night,
while people say to me continually, 'Where is your God'.

These things I remember as I pour out my soul:
how I went with the throng and led them in procession to the house of God,
with glad shouts and songs of thanksgiving, a multitude keeping festival.

Why are you cast down, O my soul, and why are you disquieted within me?
Hope in God; for I shall again praise him, my help and my God.

NRSV

* How long will you lie there, you sluggard? When will you get up from your sleep?
