An evening with Mr Fowles

Leash went out last night to massage old bikies at the Ulysses Club ("Growing Old Disgracefully") AGM that is being held in Geelong this week. She didn't get many takers - despite everyone she saw having what she calls "bikies back" - but she did get to spend a couple of hours talking to her mum (who is a member). Came back rather late and rather emotional - typical of time spent with her mum...

I spent the evening with John Fowles. I have decided he is my all time favourite author. I'm working my way through "the Magus" at the moment - it's a bit strange (but let's face it, that's half the reason I like Fowles) and it is wonderfully passionate. It's an intellectual experiment delving into the human psyche, bound together with a powerful love story, but it has scenes of absolute horror as well, taken from one character's stories of the second world war. I think I love it because it is very emotionally engaging, both highs and lows, and behind it all is this thread of experimentation with the human mind and relationships and with the written form.

We read John Fowles at high school: "The Collector". It was interesting, but I would never have read another if we hadn't have studied "The French Lieutentant's Woman" when I was at uni. As a student that book was the most influential out of all those studied. I've only just recently got back into him, finished "Daniel Martin" a couple of months ago - that one was hard work, very intellectual, lots of high-brow, classic-literarature references I didn't understand, and lots of quotes in French which I also didn't understand.

Anyway, I've decided never to watch tele again - reading is like a million times better. (Except maybe Thursday nights, the ABC has the Kumars, Ali G and Mondo Thingo all in a row - aiii)
