How good are musicals! We went to see a live performance of The King and I last week because my youngest sister's boyfriend was in it, and it was fantastic. Very professional. Quite an interesting story too - I thought it was funny how the woman who comes to emancipate the women in the King's society is a 19th C woman with a big bum dress and white gloves - a woman we now consider to be from a fairly restricted society herself. Nice. Also timeless with its insights into the way things change, the way the old has to die to make way for the new. No-one is very sure that the new is really any better, but the old still has to die. Here's a quote from a song 'A Puzzlement' by the King:
There are times I almost think
Nobody sure of what he absolutely know.
Everybody find confusion
In conclusion he concluded long ago
And it puzzle me to learn
That tho' a man may be in doubt of what he know,
Very quickly he will fight...
He'll fight to prove that what he does not know is so!
We also watched Phantom of the Opera on dvd this morning, info here, that was absolutely fabulous as well. The distorted extortionist. The singers are awesome, their voices perfect. Recommended.
