Sarah - yes, missing out 'adultery resulting in multiple murder' songs was, I admit, a major omission.

Lemly - have to confess, I don't know any of the songs you've mentioned (other folkies gasp). But I agree with your point about songs enabling us to face issues which are otherwise taboo or too painful. I wouldn't say no-one does that anymore, but it's certainly not to be found in the mainstream.

T&E - Totally agree with your comments. Songs were always about storytelling, and the songs in the charts only tell the blandest, most comercially acceptable stories most of the time. Christian songs, like most of our worship, tends to be surface level and triumphalistic, and therefore misses out on deeper issues, doing us all a disservice. And protest songs?... yes, I like them too and think I may do a separate entry on those some time.
