What I have done to prepare for the arrival of my mother in law this Christmas:

• Moved tons of boxes out of the spare room
• Painted half of the walls
• Moved tons of boxes back into the spare room, as they were cluttering the house
• And out again
• Painted the other half of the walls
• Moved boxes back in
• And back out
• Painted the radiator and half the skirting
• Boxes again
• Still need to paint the second half of skirting
• Still need to put up bed which we bought several months ago
• Still need to get some food
• Still need to actually work out what on earth we do with the boxes that are cluttering her room
• Tried to sort out our whole life in time for her arrival. This was an ill-advised venture that was always going to end in disappointment.

What I have done to prepare for the coming of Christ:

• Offloaded responsibility for organising a worship service onto some other poor mug
• Actually went to a children's praise service, where I was made to pay for the offloading by being ‘asked' very publicly to play Shine Jesus Shine with, oh, 5 seconds notice
• Set up a blog to talk about advent
