The Sport of Kingmakers

Hunting has been described, if I'm not mistaken, as the Sport of Kings. Tonight is the Sport of Kingmakers.

Let's face it, politics is a sport. The best one, because it's the one that really matters. Other sports don't make any difference to our actual lives, unless you happen to be emotionally maladjusted enough (alright, I can be accused of hypocrisy here, particularly when it comes to cricket ). Only politics though affects how I live, and the lives of everyone else in the country.

Politicians act like it's a sport. The team colours of red, blue and yellow; the rosettes; the hardcore supporters; the tribal nature of it. It's a sport. Expect tonight to hear someone chant 'O - the La-bour par-ty! - you're the great-est team - the world has ever seen', or maybe (talking to Kilroy-Silk) 'You're s*** and you know you are.'

And if politics is a sport, tonight's the grand final. Champions League. There's only one poll that counts, and this is it.

So if it's the grand final - be a sports fan! Get a few beers in and invite the lads and lasses round to watch. The BBC have even given us suggestions as to how to have an election party

It's the sport of kingmakers. You've not just shouted from the terraces - you've helped decide the final score. Sit on the edge of your seat, or even behind the sofa if it's looking bad, and wait for the results to come in.
