Last night, I was dreaming, caught in a prison cell

Well, no, not really. Last night I met up with our minister to have a debriefing session after the sermon I preached on Sunday. Very good discussion - what's a sermon for? What is it meant to achieve? What effect are we aiming for?

I think there are two types of sermon - one is the "teaching" sermon, which gives a quite detailed exposition or argument to prove a point about the scripture reading or part of the Christian faith. The other is about painting big brush strokes, giving people vision, setting out the parameters within which we operate.
