Approaching heaven from the West,
a mile out, a heavy swell against us,

the rain near horizontal, the lights
of the harbour blurred, we fought

against the oars for over an hour, until,
exhausted, we fell back, and drifted,

half-dazed under the dancing flashes.
If you find us, half drowned in an open boat,

the cold and damp eating away
at our hands and feet, our faces

shining with the cold sea,
bring us into land for burial.
