Christmas Music

A quick second post for today - I meant to post it a couple of days back, but didn't get round to it. Mr D has made a couple of good CDs of Christmas Music...some new stuff that I don't know, like Thea Gilmore, but also perrenial favourites (or should that actually be "annual" favourites...) such as "Run With The Fox"

and Chris Rea's "Driving Home For Christmas"  I remember the first time I drove by myself from London to Liverpool for Christmas - stuck in the middle of Birmingham on the M6, and this came on the music player...so apt! It still makes me smile when I remember it - I was so grumpy and fed up, then this played, reminding me of who I was going to see, and why. The wait really didn't matter so much after that...

And "Run With the Fox" is so wintry and delicious!

Are you hopeful? Are you haunted
By the ghost of Christmas Past?
Face the future undaunted
Step aside or take your chance...

Of course, these are secular songs. Choosing a favourite carol is maybe harder: I like slightly off-the-wall/quirky carols, something a bit different. Old or new, it doesn't matter. But in the end, I do come back to a very common carol, that I used to dislike, being so ubiquitous. Until one Christmas Day I actually thought about what I was singing and the whole amazingness of it struck me anew. I'm "off God" at the moment, but I still believe in his saving grace and his love for humankind. Strangely though, his love seems close at this time of year, but also far away, as we contemplate the possibly imminent death of a dear friend...For all that, I wish All My Readers a very happy Christmas and a peaceful and joyful 2011.

Hail the heav'n-born Prince of Peace!
Hail the Son of Righteousness!
Light and life to all He brings
Ris'n with healing in His wings
Mild He lays His glory by
Born that man no more may die
Born to raise the sons of earth
Born to give them second birth
Hark! The herald angels sing
"Glory to the newborn King!"
