I went the the APA (like the RSPCA) to see if I could volunteer to dog walk when I have a break between lessons. However, this is only possible if you are a Godparent to a dog. It costs 10€ a month, giving you the right to take the dog out. So I strolled round the centre - wanting, quite frankly, to adopt all of them! - but when I saw Benjy I knew he was "the One".
On Friday Benjy and I got acquainted as we went out for a walk - he was a bit of a puller, and if I could have run with him I think he'd have been very happy. I took some dog treats along witrh me, and he liked those - except by the end of the walk he was knackered because it was a really hot day, & I think the treats were too dry. He refused a treat at the end & drank a lot of water when we got back. The Centre insist that on hot days the dogs get a shower when they come back - Benjy wasn't too keen on this - but I'm not sure I would have been, as it was with a fairly powerful jet-washer! There was some cowering going on.
Here is Benjy with his lovely new lead. He has a new ball too, but we've not played with that yet. I shall wait until I feel happier that he'll come back to me.
I'm hoping to take him out for a few hours tomorrow - I'm teaching at 4.00, but if I go to Clermont earlier, we could go for a long walk together. And if Mr D and I have a free day when we go out for the day, we might go via Clermont and pick up Benjy for the day.
I'd like to bring him home with us, but with three cats I'm not sure it's a good idea. And Mr D is not keen on the idea of a dog. Never mind, I hope this plan is a reasonable substitute...although I may find it difficult if Benjy gets properly adopted by someone. I already like him a lot.
