I'm curious...

Okay, on the back of a post by Lanark and a comment by Ness, I have a question for you:

"How many of you have a great number of books on your shelves that you have not read?"

I have recently learned that, amongst my group of friends, I am unusaul in that I tend not to acquire loads and loads of media, such as books, CDs and DVDs. Also, when I married Jeff, I was not only surprised that he had a tendency to buy a great deal of stuff, but that he had not read alot of the books or watched many of the DVDs.

Now, I have accepted that I am the exception with regard to owning a number of books etc. However, I am wondering whether I am also alone in thinking that possessing things and not having read or watched them is odd? Am I, in fact, the odd one here?

I have deliberately omitted the use of the word 'yet' in this post. It appears to me that the things just sit on the shelf and don't get around to being used. That seems pointless to me. Even if they do eventually get read, why buy them so far in advance? Also, I would counter the idea of a library of read books being pointless by asking why own them in the first place, then? Why not borrow, if once they are read they no longer have a purpose?

Are we, in fact, just victims of buying and owning things for the sake of it (as Lanark appears to suggest)? If so, despite the fact that I enjoy books, films and music, I appear to be pretty immune in this area. (Tho' in the region of clothing, for e.g., I do have a tendency to indulge).

This is a genuine question, I'm not having a go at those of you who do this (especially if, as I am beginning to suspect, I discover myself to be in a minority;) Suffice to say, I simply don't get it!

Please help me!
