Anyone see Lance Armstrong doing his field ploughing trick today? I'm sure if he asks his bike sponsors they can sort him out with some knobbly tyres. I hope Joseba Beloki isn't too badly hurt, it takes some special rider to get on the podium of every Tour he's ridden. Good to see David Millar having a pop at the big boys too.

Anyway here's a link to a transcript of a Bill Hicks performance at the Dominion Theatre, London. I'm guessing it's about late '93 / early '94 because it was one of his last performances in the UK before he died of cancer age 32. *Please be warned though that there is some colourful language here.* So why am I posting a link to a stand-up routine on a blog called Christianity and Culture? Well, Bill Hicks was / is a cultural / spiritual icon. He was far more a preacher than a pure comedian. For him comedy wasn't so much about making people laugh, it was more about shaking people 'till they woke up, opened their eyes and thought about life / politics / social issues for themselves. For that reason his routines were not just about catharsis, for many they were a revelation, a point of epiphany on their own inner journey. Why is this? Well, think about it a moment, who else apart from the stand-up comedian in our society is free to simply tell the truth as they see it, without fear of being sacked, losing an election, or upsetting a congregation? (Now, to me, that sounds pretty much like the role of a prophet. Isn't that a role the church is supposed to support?). As such he is free to burst bubbles of pretension in a way that very few others are, and as such the Christian church can learn a lot from him about itself, and how it makes many in our society feel about themselves and about Christianity. Explore, but don't say I didn't warn you......you might even enjoy it.

I remembered today that I said I was going to post the words to a monologue on a Mixmaster Morris CD. I'll try and do it tomorrow.

Take care beautiful people,

DK.

P.S. I'm not sure if the title to this entry should refer to Le Tour or Bill Hicks.........hmmmmm......go figure.
