...communicating in a house shared with a German and a Spanish woman. Not that they don't speak good English, it's just that we have sooo many little slang phrases which we don't even think about. But even ordinary (or at least what I'd consider to be ordinary) language constantly causes confusion (nice alliteration huh). A friend of mine in St. Andrews had been organising a recently held conference on Medieval sexuality and had some mugs printed with the word 'Sex' on one side and a rather...erm...frank medieval mosaic (I think) on the other side. So I'm chatting to her on the phone and innocently asked if there was any possibility of having a medieval sex mug. It now seems apparent that the words 'medieval sex mug' do not translate well into Spanish or German.
Anyway, our Spanish visitor makes *THE BEST* banana and cinnamon smoothies you've ever experienced. Right tasty. Cheers Mavi. Breakfast has become a healthy fruity delight.
Reading more Andre Brink at the moment too, and have another lined up after this one. Then I go out with people for coffee and by the end of the evening they've drawn up a list of 'must reads' for me. I now have a list of over 60 'must reads'. Think I might need to focus a bit over the summer, drop the dead wood, etc
Paul Tillich rocks. Read most of his 'Theology of Culture' as an undergrad and just started returning to it. Must admit that it's much more, well, meaningful this time round.
Off to get a sarnie. Need one badly. Rumble, rumble....
