This is something...

...I posted on my fave music discussion forum in respose to someone today. It kinda sums up how feel about music at the moment.

Hey [insert name], I'm not 'pro', I don't derive my main income from music (yet!), but just a few months ago I got to a point where I realised that music is meant for the minds / ears / bodies of people, not for the surfaces of hard drives. Since then I've been treating the music almost like a 9-5 (ok maybe a 10-7!), loving every minute of it, learning loads, creating some of my best work yet and getting some good realistic feedback and encouragement. Before that my music never had a connection with the world outside of my bedroom studio and so I never had the motivation to persevere with and finish tracks. It's just a change of mindset.

I guess it sounds a bit pretentious to suggest 'I have the gift of music', especially when I don't really play an instrument (ok, I can wing-it on piano at a push), but I do love the process of melding disparate sounds into a coherent whole which comes to mean something to me (and hopefully listeners). And it's that process and the results of that process which I think is a gift. But gifts are to be shared, they aren't for one person, they are for (perhaps geographically disparate) communities and should in some way help to make life better, fuller, more satisfying, more dangerous and more flavourful. That's something to aspire to I think.
