"The U.S. war in Iraq now costs more per month than the average monthly cost of military operations in Vietnam in the 1960s and 1970s, according to a report issued on Wednesday.

The report, entitled "The Iraq Quagmire" from the Institute for Policy Studies and Foreign Policy in Focus, both liberal, anti-war organizations, put the cost of current operations in Iraq at $5.6 billion (3.1 billion pounds) per month. This breaks down to almost $186 million a day."

- From Yahoo News 31/8/05.

Now, I'm the last person to argue against war on financial grounds, purely because there are other far more (imo) important grounds on which to oppose senseless wars. $186m a day does seem a tad expensive, though not being exactly au fait with such military monetary madness it may actually be value-for-money of some twisted kind. The thing is, imagine how $186m a day for a couple of years could transform vast numbers of lives if used in the right way, i.e. free education, sustainable farming, fair trade co-ops, etc. Now that would be value for money.
