...where you get your inspiration from, that stuff that helps you make sense of where you are in relation to the world around you. Me? I've been getting it in artist manifestos of late. You shouldn't think of artist manifestos as being things which you should only take notice of when you're engaged in creative stuff. No, no, no. Being creative isn't about making stuff, it's about process, sometimes with a "product" at the end, sometimes not. The act of living is this process, whether or not it is artistic / creative depending on the intensity of engagement. What's the point of the process? Growth. The trouble is, growth is a stormy sea compared to the safe harbour of "the good". Growth is about allowing waves to crash over you, flirting with possible disaster, having to sweat to hold things together. Religious institutions are usually interested in good. Good is the fake version of growth designed by health & safety inspectors, approved by Brussels. It's anemic, spiritless, predictable, weak, known. Growth is crowd surfing with a thousand strangers; good is a night watching repeats on UK Gold. Bruce Mau writes:
"Forget about good. Good is a known quantity. Good is what we all agree on. Growth is not necessarily good. Growth is an exploration into unknown recessesd that may not yield to our research. As long as you stick to good you'll never have real growth."
So, might Jesus be an artist who's been mugged by the health & safety inspectors of the spirit? Worth thinking about.
