Have been / will be catching up on a few films which passed me by at the cinema stage of their lives this week. Last night was the turn of 'Lost in Translation'. What a great subtle film. Funnily enough I was doing a spot of guitar practice the day before and played along to Elvis Costello's What's so Funny 'bout Peace, Love and Understanding, then half way through the film Bill Murray sings the very same song karaoke. Reminded me of a time when I was in a karaoke bar in Brussels with a few friends. Everyone was having a big loud night out on the Belgiums finest export and some big guy who could have passed for a Led Zep roadie got up and sang some old Elvis Presley song about some small old chapel. The place went dead quiet, you could've heard a pin drop and the atmosphere changed completely. Sneaky old Elvis, using that stubborn layer of religious residue as a way of sneaking God into atheist Belgium. Tut tut.
