Fortunately, the choir was in good strength and good form today, with a full Patronal Festival programme. There were many references to soldiers and fighting the good fight in the hymns, in addition to the special words set to 'Happy band of pilgrims' particularly written for our patron saint, Eustachius. The morning service was rounded off in similar triumphal tone with 'Zadok the Priest' (Handel) and an organ voluntary which sounded scarily like the Keystone Cops (Toccata in B Minor - Gigout).
Our guest preacher at Evensong was the grandson of a former parish priest, which must have made the more senior members of the congregation feel rather old. We gave our new (to us) Canticle settings an outing (Wood in D), together with the rather more well-known Sweeney responses and 'Let all the world' (Vaughan Williams). Our little grand-daughter was in the congregation, adding her chuckling voice to the music - one of the basses decided that she would definitely be an alto when she was old enough to join the choir.
