A wondrous week of music making by the Exon Singers, our annual visiting choir. Under a new conductor (Richard Wilberforce) they sounded as good as ever, with a full programme of evening concerts, lunchtime recitals, daily Compline, Choral Evensong and Sunday morning Eucharist. Notable highlights were Purcell's 'I was glad', the full programme of music by Byrd, Pearsall's 'Lay a Garland' and Grieg's 'Ave Maris Stella'. James Lancelot finally made it down to Cream Tealand (having had an planned earlier visit aborted by floods) and our own Brian Chapple didn't have to travel at all to be composer-in-residence. Brian's 'Ave Verum Corpus' was particularly wonderful, influenced by the much earlier Byrd setting, which was also heard during the week.
And now to my summer holiday, this year to be spent in Cambridge.....
