The very opposite of schmaltz

Heading towards our Summer Holiday, with only one more service to go. Today's service was taken by a newly retired priest, who didn't appear too fazed by our way of doing things. Some very agonised organ music during the administration had us puzzling: 'Who is the composer? Why is the organist choosing this music today?' I'd never heard the composition before and hope never to do so again - it was enough to turn the wine into vinegar - perhaps our organist is in sore need of a holiday as well! Mozart's 'Ave Verum Corpus' sounded positively jovial by comparison - apparently we sounded well-balanced despite a shortage of sopranos, and the anthem was well-received by the most critical of audiences, a recuperating soprano, in the congregation today by necessity.
