Welsh Cakes

My home choir sang 'Lead me, Lord' (Wesley) and 'The Call' (Lloyd) but I was in travelling mode, heading for the Llandaff Cathedral Festival. We enjoyed two evensongs, one by the Cathedral School girls, with appropriate music to suit their light touch (including a wonderful in-house 'Ave Maria', Quinn), and one by the Cathedral boys (Ayleward responses, Noble in B Minor, and Stanford's 'Beati Quorum Via', some of my favourites). After each evensong, there was cake (what cake!), wine, and a concert. The first of these featured the Llandaff Choral Society, singing Faure's Requiem (which they appeared to know very well indeed) and a selection of shorter anthems which were more of a challenge. I particularly enjoyed the four treble voices singing 'Pie Jesu' as if one voice. The second evening's concert was a much smaller group - a soprano soloist, a pianist and five instrumentalists from the Welsh National Opera, singing and playing in various combinations. I was disappointed that these highly professional musicians didn't have a larger audience. Perhaps word hadn't got around about the cake!
