Slowly but Surely

It was lovely to be back in our own church after a couple of weeks away - no matter how wonderful other churches and towns are, there's no place like home. We had a large number of visitors today - possibly some of them came with the two visiting members of clergy (a curate from a nearby parish and the DDO). It being Vocation Sunday, the DDO preached, not surprisingly, on vocations: saying that our first vocation must be to be Human Beings, not Human Doings; only then are we able to offer ourselves in service in an appropriate way (which may not be the same as someone else). It was a little hard to hear everything she was saying, but fortunately I was in a position to lip read, which helped. Numbers were down in the alto section today, so we borrowed a second soprano to help out in the exposed leads of 'Teach me O Lord' (Attwood). We then processed slowly back up the aisle to the sound of the organ playing 'Chariots of Fire': Vangelis (in celebration of a member of the congregation successfully completing the London Marathon) which raised a few smiles. The highlight of the service for me was the voluntary, 'Carillon de Westminster' (Vierne), which always sends shivers down my spine, and whetted my appetite for the organ recital tomorrow lunchtime.
