Cathedral Praise

Due to family commitments, our most regularly attended Cathedral is now Llandaff, rather than our local one at Exeter. I spent some time on Saturday exploring the Llandaff area, one of the more affluent areas of Cardiff with a very pleasant little historic village and green overlooking the cathedral itself. Well-fed with welsh cakes and bara brith from nearby cafes, I settled down to enjoy evensong (RSCM Voices) while grandchorister amused herself blowing raspberries, in time to the music of course. Byrd's second service sounded confident, with well-sung Alto and Tenor solos; I had not heard either Viadana's 'Exultate Justi' or Scheidt's 'Surrexit Christus Hodie' before, but both were very enjoyable, even if the second composer had a rather unfortunate-sounding name!

Sunday saw us attending the Parish Eucharist - true to its Low Sunday reputation, the congregation was about half the usual size, with no Sunday School or Choir. Consequently, the volume of the singing was very low as well - we felt that our chorister training, particularly in the Psalm (set to Anglican chant) came in very useful, and we were able to provide some back-up. It was also a good chance to catch up on several of the traditional Easter hymns we were not able to sing last week at our own church.
