This morning was the turn of our retired 'grandfatherly' priest, who readily admitted that it was many years since he has taken a baptism service, and that he hoped he wouldn't drop the baby in the font! Fortunately, the service passed without incident, beautifully explained and carried out in the efficient, laid-back way that only a lifetime of priestly duties can produce. Grandchorister was also present, and she kept us entertained during the anthem (Bread is Blessed and Broken - Iona) with lots of cute baby smiles, ensuring we were not looking at the conductor at all!
Due to some sort of hitch in the arrangements, the priest assigned to take evensong tonight didn't turn up. As is usual in these extreme circumstances, one of the churchwardens fortunately stepped into the breach - but, unfortunately, he was also the organist, leading to much leaping about trying to be in the right place at the right time. Even he drew the line at leaping into the pulpit though, so we all cheered (in a dignified Anglican way, of course) when we heard him announce there would be no sermon tonight.
Calm was further maintained by the theme of the anthem ('Deep Peace' - Rutter), but we were finally able to give our churchwarden/organist/octopus/juggler a huge cheer when he finally arrived in the vestry after the voluntary, for a job well done. Next week, I fear it will have all gone to his head, and he will be wearing a cut-out 'fairy liquid bottle' dog collar slipped into the front of his shirt....
