I love the black robes edged with gold (the small amount of hope shining around the gloom of the reality). And the sermon fully acknowledged the sense of loss and pain, not pretending everything is fine. I wonder if Mother Julian realised her words ("All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of thing shall be well") would still be quoted so meaningfully at the unimaginably vast distance of 2011?
Low congregational and choir numbers, but it was the third such service of the week, although the only full choral Eucharist. The atmosphere was one of quiet, calm, thoughtful remembrance. In a large church such as ours, you don't often get quiet and calm at the Eucharist, so it made a refreshing change. Psalm 23 was sung reflectively (responsorial psalm), and there was quiet organ music instead of the anthem. We processed out to Elgar's Nimrod, always so haunting on these occasions.
The cake afterwards was top class - Lemon Drizzle cake and Apple cake, made by the two Pats (Pat-a-cake, Pat-a-cake). It was hard to choose between them so I had both.
