Festive Fare

Our patronal festival weekend was packed with even more activities than usual. The Vicar's cricket team was thrashed by The Others, blamed entirely on having to dodge heavy showers, of course. Man of the match was one of our young choristers, Toby - amply demonstrating that he has other talents as well as singing. It was much warmer in the clubhouse, so we all dried out over tea and cakes, followed later in the evening by a cider and sausage festival. Nobody complained of being cold or wet after that.

On the Sunday, the festivities continued, with Festival Eucharist ('Ave Verum', Byrd) and a humorous playlet by our youngest members, all about those who helped build the church and keep it going. The appearance of a woman bishop during the play gave us all hope for the future! The afternoon cream-tea-with-cake was delicious - even though we were forced to endure the Friends AGM beforehand in order to be fed! It is easy to see how we can continue to be 'Onward Christian Soldiers' marching on full stomachs.

At Evensong, the Vicar joined our depleted Alto section to ensure a good balance for the Sweeney responses, Brewer Mag. and Nunc. and Handel's 'Zadok the Priest'. We rounded off the evening with a Festive Flutes concert, by a very talented quartet, playing a mix of classical, film and musical repertoire. Relaxing over a glass of wine, it was a very pleasant end to the festivities.
