Commanding young bishop

Another mass baptism today - five babies at once. Last time we had one of those it was rather noisy and tiring, but today it was the baptism of the 8-week-old son of one of our altos - he knew just how one should behave in church and kept them all in line. That boy will make bishop inside 30 years, mark my words. And getting baptised in a (Cornish) kilt, he is already familiar with the 'outfit'. I have discovered one advantage in having a combined baptism - it means we get to sing 'Shine Jesus Shine' (at the lighting of the baptismal candles) less often. And that has to be a good thing.

The returning choir were welcomed back and prayed for in the intercessions, which gave us great encouragement as we begin the lead-in to Harvest, Advent and the very busy Christmas season. At the morning Eucharist and also at Evensong, we sang 'A new Commandment', but two different settings by two different composers. Firstly, 'I give you a new commandment' by Aston, and secondly, 'A new commandment' by Shephard. It's easy to love one another when we've returned from a long holiday, keen to get singing again, but hopefully the sentiment will last through the whole year.
