I looked forward to returning to my own church after a long break. The wedding of a well-known church member is always a cause for celebration and this one was no exception. We repeated the glorious music we'd sung at the previous night's concert - Parry's 'I was glad', Purcell's 'Bell Anthem', and Handel's 'Hallelujah Chorus'. I wish we had the resources to sing such music so well at every wedding. The social committee had worked hard all day to put on a glorious spread - after the choir and all the guests had tucked in and had their fill, there wasn't much left at the end.
Sunday's offerings were more subdued, with tired voices. 'The Call' by Lloyd in the morning, and 'Give us the wings of faith' by Bullock in the evening. This was followed by slices of rather delicious fruit cake left over from the previous week's confirmation service and some tasty sweets which mysteriously appeared in the choir vestry during the week. Some of us swore that it is possible to survive entirely on choir parties and vestry handouts - which is probably not too far from the truth.
