Plastic Cups and Brown Paint

Instead of choir practice, we were asked to do a concert at a nearby Methodist church. It was very strange to be applauded for singing anthems, we are really not used to it. In addition to full choir anthems (Jesu Joy, Bach; Ave Verum, Mozart; Magnificat in C, Stanford; Hallelujah Chorus, Handel) there were various solos, duets and instrumental items. We drank water in coloured plastic cups in the schoolroom during the interval, very retro, but those of us in need of stronger stuff made up for it in the pub afterwards. A long-time female priest friend presided at the Eucharist service on Sunday morning. Last time she came, she said we had more priests than the Vatican, but this time with sabbaticals and thinly spread clergy across the deanery, we were very glad of her assistance. It was difficult singing 'Here O my Lord' (Whitlock) without a conductor, as we tended to slow down too much, although the tuning sounded confident - often a problem with this anthem. The youngest choristers wrestled with a newly made banner by the Vestry Group, daubing themselves in brown paint in the process. Although their mothers may appreciate their creative efforts, they may not be so pleased by the extra washing.
