Disaster! The donkey was not available - just think how the course of religious history might have been changed if that had happened 2,000 years ago.... Instead, we followed the bepalmed cross, acolytes and children in 1st century dress, across the road (Beatles-style) singing 'All glory laud and honour', the rear much slower than those in front. Palm Sunday, don't you just love it, and would you have it any other way? The children made up for the disappearing donkey by treating us to a very well performed playlet - 'The Tale of the Three Trees', each of which was able to contribute to something wooden used by Christ. Our season of easier, but moving, anthems continued with 'Herliebster Jesu' (Cruger). The lower parts hummed alternate verses to provide variety. Trees and people alike processed out with a spring in their step to Boyce's 'Gavotte'. Instead of Evensong, there was an ecumenical Passiontide devotion, launching the beginning of the 'Imagining Easter' Art Exhibition. As well as hymns, readings and prayers, we sang excerpts from Faure's 'Requiem', Stainer's 'Crucifixion', and five choristers sang Tallis's 'Litany' as people walked slowly round viewing the exhibits. Fortunately, the service leader liked our singing as he'd left his microphone on, and his prayers and words of thanks rang around the church instead of just quietly within the vestry.
