Peace, Perfect Peace

Today's conveyor belt baptism (5 babies at once) passed off extremely quietly, but due to the large numbers I was unable to identify which baby belonged to which parents and godparents. As long as they were able to identify each other and took the correct baby home, then I suppose it didn't really matter. Perhaps their composure and lack of tears was due to us singing 'Peace, Perfect Peace' (Gibbons) as the anthem. We built it up gradually, with solo, 4 singers, 8 singers, then full choir. The older children were very quiet also, being given paper 'flames' to hold and flicker during the sermon, making quite a realistic bonfire effect. The only noisy aspect to the whole service was Boellman's 'Toccata' played as the Voluntary (one of my favourites). Evensong was peaceful, as usual. Whitlock's 'Here, O my Lord' had a much fuller and more confident sound than usual, due to a large turnout of choristers, most people being back from half-term holidays.
