Rutter's 'Look at the World' reminds me so much of Marmite - you either love it or you hate it. Our choirmaster loves it as he gets to do all the extra twiddles on the piano - I sometimes think he forgets we're actually supposed to sing as well. Unfortunately today he got so carried away that he broke a leg off the piano (when moving it not when playing) so he might have to be more subdued in future. Balfour Gardiner's 'Evening Hymn' had to make do with only four sopranos tonight - but they sang their hearts out and didn't sound at all drowned out by the ATBs. A frog appeared to have taken up residence in my throat so I was extremely relieved that the vicar decided to sing counter-tenor tonight for all but the hymns (where he enjoyed reverting to bass). After an appalling practice, where our musical memory collectively left us, we sang the 'World Premiere' of the Sweeney Lord's Prayer with confidence. The vicar declared it to be 'marvellous' - his favourite word.
