Our organist was on his well-deserved break, so our retired deputy organist returned to a great welcome. His quiet, reflective organ medley during the administration was much appreciated, as was one of my favourite voluntaries, 'Choral Song' (Wesley). The anthem ('Ave Verum' - Mozart) sounded rather sluggish when it began, lulled no doubt by the peaceful organ playing, but we finally all woke up and got going by the third phrase! After listening to radio 3 all week, one of the sopranos exclaimed 'Oh no, not more Mozart!' at which point we threatened to replace it with some Rutter, her least favourite composer. It was very encouraging to see so many children in church this morning, including several of our young choristers who sang part-time in the choir but also managed to fit in some vestry group craft activities during the middle part of the service. The vicar said they had been so busy they had given him enough material for ten sermons - in addition to which they also presented him with a birthday present. One of the altos remarked that the children deserved double choir pay this week for all their efforts.
