Thankfully there was a choir practice this week, so we felt rather better prepared for the services. Harper's 'Spirit of the Lord come down' made a fitting anthem for the Eucharist - one of my favourite modern settings. The service ended with a triumphant organ voluntary (Carillon - Vierne) which terrified away the last of the black ice lurking outside the choir vestry. At first, it looked as if we would be singing Festival Evensong with only two sopranos, but fortunately three others arrived just as the pre-service rehearsal was getting under way. The Smith responses, two psalms to Anglican chant (46 and 47), Brewer in D canticles and 'O for a closer walk' Stanford, were sung in a refreshingly well-populated church, now that the winter weather has begun to retreat. At least for now. We have also gained another alto, so now the lower parts are well-represented (although one of our basses has sadly moved to pastures new). All we need now are more sopranos...
