We wish you a snowy Christmas

We slipped and slid to the hospital on Christmas Eve to sing carols and sup on mulled apple juice. Fortunately, the black ice we encountered did not lead to any additional casualty admissions. The snow and ice didn't put off the Midnight Mass congregation and the church was full to hear our choir master's arrangement of 'Silent Night'. We arrived to another full church on Christmas morning, where we sang 'Away in a Manger', (tune, Kirkpatrick, with the lovely harmonies by Willcocks). I wish all alto lines could be as interesting to sing. Not surprisingly, with Boxing Day / St. Stephen's Day being a Sunday, the church was half empty. People can only cope with so many church services in a row. However, there was a baptism and therefore lots of cake, which meant plenty to go around. 'Good King Wenceslas' was sung with gusto, but the promised soloist was not able to make the service so we enjoyed listening to a piano interlude instead - our Director of Music is good at 'filling in the gaps'. We then went to find some moorland snow which still lay round about deep and crisp and even, for a bracing Boxing Day walk.
