Raspberries and Wine

The processional started with a huge raspberry emanating from the organ. Cue much laughter and a hasty retreat to the piano by our highly flexible organist. Consequently, the rest of the service was accompanied by piano, including the anthem 'Wachet auf' (Bach). As our church is large, and the piano cannot be heard at the back of church, I'm not entirely sure that all the sleepers woke. Fortunately, due no doubt to some very hard work by the organist all Sunday afternoon, the offending instrument was back in full working order for our Advent Carol Service. Choir items included 'Advent Response' (Jarvis), 'Adam lay ybounden' (Warlock), ''Jesus Christ the Apple Tree' (Poston), 'The Angel Gabriel' (arr. Sweeney) and 'People look East' (arr. Bramma). These, together with hot mulled wine and mince pies, received very favourable comments from the assembled congregation. We returned, heartened and fortified, to the cold temperature outside.
