Not feeling too well this weekend, I decided I'd either have the stamina to get up early and struggle to the morning service OR have a lie-in and get to harvest lunch, but not both. I think it's obvious which option won. Consequently, I missed the inaugural service of a new tenor (we're also working on his wife who sings alto) and the appointment of two new teenage head choristers. Fortunately, three altos turned up, so I wasn't missed too much. Being harvest, a service attended by lots of visitors, two lively contributions were deemed appropriate - the choir anthem 'Look at the world' (Rutter) and the children's song 'Broad beans sleeping in a blankety bed'. Not many broad beans were in evidence at the ensuing meal, but delicious roasted vegetables with mediterranean chicken were served, followed by Eve's pudding. Most of us ate far too much. Returning after a rest, we enjoyed Harvest Festival evensong, strangely without traditional hymns but instead a selection from the 'Creation' section of the hymn book. The Smith responses, Stanford in C and Haydn's 'The Heavens are Telling' are well-known by the choir, so we sang with confidence. Our reader was very pleased, declaring that, during our singing, heaven met earth (or was it earth met heaven?) I'm glad we made her happy, as she was preaching on the difficult subject of the hardship faced by farmers in current times.
