Smiles all round

Back to Church Sunday didn't look much fuller than usual, but there were new faces and some older ones missing. And, best of all, there was cake! The best Lemon Drizzle Cake I've ever tasted, baked by one of our Altos. She is so on my Best Friend list from now on.... We were much amused that the anthem was 'Turn back, O man' (Holst), a marvellous title (not) for encouraging new people to church! It went reasonably well, but we would have felt more confident with organ accompaniment rather than the piano, which was hard to hear. I suppose we are often asked to sing gentle, expression-filled music, but for this anthem our choir master's instruction was that well-known Italian Term: 'Give it lots of welly'. There was certainly lots of welly for the organ voluntary, 'Washington Post' (Sousa) which sent us on our way with a spring in our step and huge smiles on our faces. Evensong was a quiet affair, played by our relief organist. We played safe, singing 'Jesu Joy of Man's Desiring' (Bach). This time the humour was caused by a hymn announcement - after a rousing sermon about how we should all get on together, the curate announced the final hymn: 'Fight the good Fight', at which point the choir collapsed into fits of giggles. 'It could only happen in the Church of England' was the curate's response, as he ruefully shook his head. Again, the service ended with a rousing voluntary, 'Nun Danket' by Kerg-Elert - one of my favourites.
