We followed Cody the Donkey from the vicarage garden across the road and into the church, singing in very deep voices (the choir master pitched the note of 'All Glory Laud and Honour' too low). The church was surprisingly full, given the clocks changed forward one hour. A delightful dramatic presentation followed, with young children playing the parts of the donkey, Jesus and the crowds. Our anthem, 'Hosanna to the Son of David' (Sumsion) fitted very well into the overall theme. The curate minced into the vestry with a handbag on his arm and we nearly phoned the bishop. It turned out he was only horsing around, and good-natured ribbing ensued. He was in a good mood because we were singing one of his favourite anthems, 'Set me as a seal' (Walton). I suppose if you can't set a seal on your arm, a handbag will do.
