Call to Remembrance

Remembrance Sunday is always a very special, reflective, quiet time and this year was no exception. The service was played straight, with nothing unnecessarily silly to mar the solemnity of the occasion. 'Call to remembrance' (Farrant) was sung quietly by a quartet, then repeated with full choir. This made for a long anthem, but it still did not cover the length of the queue for communion. During the lengthy service, the children made their own poppies, which they displayed during the final blessing. The town service began a few minutes later, around the war memorial, a few yards from the church grounds. This is taken very seriously, with a full turnout of all the uniformed organisations, military and non-military, in the town, plus a parade of veterans and town councillors. The last post sounded haunting, as always, and we sang 'O God our help in ages past' and the National Anthem to the accompaniment of the Stannary Band. It was a busy Sunday, with evensong as well. We sang 'My eyes for beauty pine' by Howells, and the voluntary was the St. Anne Fugue (Bach), completing the duo after the Prelude was played in the morning.
