A fairly ordinary baptism service, with Wood's 'O thou the central orb' as the anthem (the reduced soprano line sang very well - we sounded just like a chamber choir). Ordinary, that was, until the last hymn, when the new curate got rather enthusiastic, clapping away to 'I'll go in the strength of the Lord'. There were a few half-hearted claps from elsewhere, but mainly he did a solo turn. Evensong was replaced by the annual 'Light up a Life' service, as it was All Souls Day. This is a quiet, reflective service, when bereaved families are invited to light a tea-light to put in the shape of a cross. The choir sang several items, including the Phos Hilaron and Be still my soul (Finlandia), sounding quite atmospheric after a slightly uncertain start. Refreshments were then provided, resulting in good-quality conversation at the back of church and a very satisfactory ending to the day.
