The Back to Church service was fairly low key this year - probably a good thing as people get to see what we are really like. Also, our curate's ordination in the evening was the main highlight of the day at which the church was completely packed. In the morning, Hurford's 'Litany to the Holy Spirit' was well-received, especially the soprano solo first verse. It was also enjoyable to sing the Mass of St. Thomas (Thorne) again after a long break. The choir had a huge learning curve for the Evening Ordination service music - two of the more challenging anthems ('Lift up your heads', Matthias, and 'Set me as a seal', Walton) combined with the curate's choice of very upbeat songs from a more free church repertoire (not our choice, but it was his big day so we forgave him his questionable taste!). Still, we rose to the occasion, terrified no doubt by such a full church. The tenor solo in 'Set me as a seal' sounded particularly fine and the Matthias sounded the best we had ever sung. A very wordy, formal part to the service was beautifully offset by the children reading the intercessions, with that charm that only children can provide. They seemed a lot less perturbed by the large crowds than the choir.
